Obituary

John F. Omen, 86, of Beaver Dam passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, April 03, 2018.

John was born the son of Frank and Frances (Quigley) Omen on January 4, 1932 in Randolph, WI. He was a graduate of Randolph High School, where he met and fell in love with Marian Livingston. They married on March 11, 1953, just before John left for Korea with the U.S. Army. Upon his return to the States, John and Marian lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado for a time before returning to Wisconsin to raise their family.

John's greatest passions were love for his family and a deep sense of the importance of public service. He began working for the Beaver Dam Police Department in the late 1950's, starting out walking the beat and driving patrol as a uniformed officer, connecting with the youth of Beaver Dam as school liaison officer and then worked many years as a detective. John left the police force to serve Beaver Dam as their Mayor and as an alderman he chaired the finance committee. He proudly served the people of Dodge County as Coroner for decades and worked for Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam until his retirement.

John was active in several clubs and service groups: He was a member of the AMVETS Post 33, American Legion Post 146, the Forty & Eight, and VFW Post 1163, serving in several statewide positions. He was a member of the Beaver Dam Optimists Club, served on the Board of New Beginnings Homeless Shelter well into his retirement, and was active in organizing and coaching St. Patrick's Boys Basketball, Beaver Dam Youth Baseball, and American Legion Baseball. John and Marian loved hosting post game parties, and many fond memories were made eating pizza burgers and discussing game highlights. As he grew older, John loved sitting on his porch, waving at everyone who drove on North Center Street and talking with family and friends who visited.

John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marian of Beaver Dam; his children: Jeff (special friend, Roxann Johnson) Omen of Beaver Dam, Scott (Vicki) Omen of Roswell, GA, Chris (Denise) Omen of Walnut Creek, CA, and Mindy (Mark) Russell of Beaver Dam; his sister-in-law, Arlys Omen of Randolph; his sister-in-law Phyllis (Chuck) Gove of Randolph; all of his loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, other beloved relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Franklin and Leonard "Mick" Omen; and his daughter-in-law, Debra Omen.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at the Koepsell-Murray Funeral Home in Beaver Dam from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Michael Erwin will officiate. Interment will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Beaver Dam with military honors to be conducted by the Beaver Dam American Legion Post 146.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Badger Honor Flight.

John's family would like to thank the wonderful people at the Veterans Administration, Home Instead and Agrace Hospice for their care and support.
