Obituary

Dorothy L. Freeman, 96, a resident of Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena and formerly of Columbus, slipped peacefully away on Monday, April 17, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

Dorothy was born the daughter of Martin Sverre Fernando and Emma Johanna (Andersen) Birch on April 8, 1921 in Rockford, Illinois. She was married to Robert Peterson on Feb. 19, 1943. She later married George Freeman on July 3, 1977. She also had a very special friend, Robert Zuelsdorf. All preceded her in death. Dorothy had a long career as a registered nurse. She was employed by Swedish-American Hospital in Rockford, Divine Savior Hospital in Portage and both Lutheran and St. Joseph's Hospitals in Beaver Dam until her retirement.

Dorothy enjoyed doll collecting and had many friends in the doll clubs. Her hobbies included reading, needle working and painting. She was an accomplished artist. Dorothy loved to travel. She visited Australia, Jamaica, Norway (three times) and Canada as well as throughout the U.S. Dorothy had a love of music and enjoyed singing and playing piano. As beautifully stated by her daughter Kathleen, "She had music in her soul. She was our song."

Dorothy is survived by her four daughters, Dorothy (Larry) Korth of Michigan, Susan (Daniel) Calef of Canada, Kathleen (Daniel Born) Keating of Pardeeville, and Barbara (Lester) Jacobson of Columbus; ten grandchildren, Kevin Korth, Jason Keating, Spencer Bilke, Kirsten Korth-White, Adam Keating, Sarah Calef, Terra Johnson, Ben Calef , Rachel Peterson and Anna Calef. She was present and assisted in the births of all of her grandchildren. She also had six great-grandchildren and is further survived by other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Robert and George; a son in infancy, Thomas Robert; a grandson, Spencer Bilke; a brother, Martin Birch; a sister, Helen Long, a son-in-law, Randall Bilke; a granddaughter-in-law, Jaqueline Keating; and a great-granddaughter, Bella Korth.

A memorial gathering will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Columbus on Saturday, July 8, 2017 from 10 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 11 a.m. Pastor Sandra Schieble will officiate.

We would like to offer heart-felt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Columbia Health Care Center for their unfailing kindness and patience toward our mother and her family in the years that she was cared for by them. Your kindness and love will never be forgotten.
