Donald was born the son of Merlin W. and Frieda (Heuer) Miescke on May 31, 1932 in Horicon. He was a 1950 graduate of Horicon High School. Don joined the U.S. Air Force in 1953, where he served as a radio operator. He met his wife, Jeanez Chandler while stationed in Louisiana in 1955 and they were married in 1956 following his discharge from service.

Don worked in the sales department, parts department, and as a supervisor at John Deere Horicon Works until his retirement. He and his wife moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas in the mid-1990s, where they spent most winters, returning to reside in Horicon year-round again in 2010.

Don was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, golfing and snowmobiling, among other things. He especially loved the Horicon Marsh. After he retired, he devoted time to studying the history of the marsh, interviewing many local men and women in the process, and ultimately gathering that information together in his book, Horicon Marsh History, published in 2012.

Don was a member of the Rock River Archeological Society, Horicon American Legion, Horicon Historical Society, Ducks Unlimited, Delta Waterfowl, and Zion Lutheran Church in Horicon.

Don is survived by his children: Donnita Moore of Fond du Lac, P. Paulette (Norman) Horn of Beaver Dam, Russell (Jen) Miescke of Waupun, and Darrell (Karrie Paradies) Miescke of Mayville; nine grandchildren: Brandon, Michelle, Shaina, Cody, Dylan, Nathan, Samantha, Kyle, and Alyssa; eight great-grandchildren; his siblings: Robert Miescke of Horicon, David (Cheri) Miescke of Horicon, Mona (Earl) Lichtenberg of Mayville, and Cecelia Immerfall of Beaver Dam; his sister-in-law, Lori Miescke of Horicon; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanez in 2009; an infant daughter, Jennifer; his brother, Edward; and his sister-in-law, Sharon Miescke.
