Don Stommel, 74 years old, went home to his heavenly father on February 21, 2017 with his loving family and his loving pug Luna at his side. Don fought a courageous 2 1/2 year battle against lung cancer.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mayville, with the Rev. Father Tom Biersack celebrating. A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 25th from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church. Inurnment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery in Mayville.

Donald Henry Stommel was born a twin son to Anthony and Alice (Steffen) Stommel on July 22, 1942. Don spent most of his life living in Mayville. Don married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Joyce Weiglein, on September 29, 1962 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Leroy, WI. They would have celebrated 55 years together this fall. They were blessed with 3 wonderful children.

Don received many plaques and awards from the City of Mayville for his 23 years of service to the Mayville Fire Department as Captain of the ladder truck, 20 years to the Mayville Emergency Medical Services (EMS) (8 of those years as the EMS Coordinator). In 1985, Don was chosen as Citizen of the Year. He also was a Boy Scout Leader spending many summers at Boy Scout Camp. In recent years, he served on the Police and Fire Commission. He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church serving as an usher at the 4:30 Saturday mass as well as a distributor and a Bingo caller. Don worked 30 years at Mayville Metal Products as a punch press operator and a supervisor. He also worked at MEC and Lake Country. In his retirement, he worked part-time at Piggly Wiggly and the TAG Center.

Those Don leaves behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife Joyce, 2 sons – Tom (Melissa) Stommel, Mayville and Tim (Yuliana) Stommel, Florida, his daughter Tracy (Scott) Vinz, Mayville, grandchildren Brittany, Cami, and Meadow Vinz, Brandi Stommel (special friend Max), Mayville, and Danielle Stommel (special friend Adam), Florida, 3 step-grandchildren – Hannah, Logan, and Hailey, Mayville, his mother Alice Stommel, Lomira, his siblings – Robert (Adeline) Stommel, Patrick (Dieter) Gust, Betty Adelmeyer, Ron Stommel, and twin brother Richard (Ruby) Stommel, his first great-grandchild due this summer, his precious pug Luna, nieces, nephews, and other friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father Anthony Stommel, an infant daughter, a brother-in-law and a daughter-in-law.

In his younger years, Don enjoyed bowling, golfing, and deer hunting. He enjoyed photography – taking pictures out on the marsh and, later, pictures of his grandchildren.

In retirement, Don enjoyed cooking and modern technology. He also enjoyed NASCAR, the Packers and travelling (especially bus tours). Don made many trips taking the grandchildren to and from school. Don and Joyce were full time babysitters for the grandchildren.

Don loved to talk to anyone – a neighbor or a stranger. Don was so proud to have been a fireman and an EMT but most of all he was proud of his family. He will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Mayville.
